Finally

Kibaki (the president of Kenya) declared tomorrow a public holiday. Does more really need to be said than that?

I woke up to the generator this morning because they turned it for us to watch the returns. I didn't even make it to the TV room before I could hear the cheering from other students. I wish we had a bigger group to celebrate with (we all wished we were in Grant Park), but we packed into the TV room and cheered (and cried) through his acceptance speech nonetheless.

Thanks to everyone who voted.

Watching his speech was truly unforgettable. What a gifted man and leader--and what a remarkable moment in our history.

The announcement of his election is a moment I will always remember. I'm glad that you could experience it from the perspective of his "native" roots! I hope you post more about Kenya's celebrations. Everything was wild here last night--apparently Columbia was crazy (as we Hillary supporters say, it was the wrong alma mater :D), and people stormed the White House! At Wellesley, it was normal to hear sporadic screams throughout the night.

On a completely unrelated note: if you're missing your doggie, check out this live stream (http://cdn1.ustream.tv/swf/4/viewer.45.swf?cid=317016). Most adorable video blog ever!

It was an exciting and memorable night! I'm glad you were able to watch it, and from such a special place. What a great way to celebrate--to declare a public holiday.

He was elected by a big majority and there was a lot of cheering (and crying) here too.
